Painting

“Painting is silent poetry”

Plutarch

Katie paints portraits, landscapes, people and nature, predominantly in oils.

She will often focus in on a small part of a subject - a subtle reflection in the water, something hidden in the shadows - drawing the viewer’s attention away from the obvious and towards the most beautiful, natural or interesting element, thus creating a new perspective.

As the daughter of a sculptor, it is not surprising that painting often feels like sculpting for Katie. She enjoys playing with it, making it rougher to begin with, then adding layers and building it up, often altering it several times during the process.

The result is all in the details. The way the light falls. The glimpses into family situations, or scenes in nature, crafted with intimacy and credibility.
